Copan is the most important Mayan site in Honduras.Although settled from as early as 2000 BCE, it reached its peak during the classic period of Mayan civilisation (500 to 800 CE). The highlight of the archaeolgical site is the staircase of the hieroglyphs. Every stone in every step has a hieroglyph carved on it, and although many of them have deteriorated over time, it is still one of the most impressive sights of any Mayan archaeological site. The town also boasts a fine bird sanctuary housing many of the species native to Central America and a butterfly house. |
